Yay for Friday Morning Coffee with Suz! Well-timed, loads to talk about, things have been so crazy-busy I feel like I haven't seen her for a year. We sipped our yummy joe, ran into a few old neighbors, gossiped some more, and cackled and shrieked so loudly we damn near chased away all the other customers. Woops! Man, good friends are worth their weight in gold (or in this case, much more, since Suz is pretty tiny and doesn't weigh very much at all)!

I had to tell her about the blast of a night I had last night - my mom invited me along to her office holiday party at The Chanhassen Dinner Theater for their production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. I admit, I'm not a big Broadway musical fan of the Andrew Lloyd Weber variety, but I've always had a soft spot in my heart for Joseph. I first saw it in oh, 1983, it was my high school's spring musical production. I remember going in with low expectations...and walking out completely charmed. I went at least another five times (hey, I was 16). I had last seen it in the mid-90s, the big-time Donny Osmond version at the State Theater, very fun. And then not again until last night, almost 25 years after my first viewing (ouch!) - still fun, still charming. Good stuff.

While I was out, John was wrapping up the two-month-long celebration of our 5th anniversary. Huh? Well, back at the beginning of October, after much brain-wracking in an attempt to come up with a gift worthy of my sweet husband, I birthed two pretty friggin' awesome ideas. Idea One: a surprise dinner with his boys, his long-term buds, at 20.21. I got emailing right away, tossing out dates, and came up with...December 13th?! Ack, so far away from October 19! I felt I needed something else too, something closer to the big day, hmmm...

And then, Idea Two: I commissioned my coolicious sister Stacey to paint a portrait of Sigmund, John's dear, sweet dog who passed away last March (and who he's been missing mightily, sniff). An entire painting obviously couldn't be ready by the 19th either, but Stace thought she could have it done by Thanksgiving, so I told John he had two kickin' gifts coming. And so...Stace did her thing and delivered the painting on the Sunday of Thanksgiving weekend. It is, as you can see, completely amazing, a fabulously Stacified Siggy Roo, John was (is) absolutely blown away. BIG time hit. (Yesss!) Then last night...finally the dinner with his boys, total blast, a bawdy feasty feast that had the guys thanking me for thinking of it. (Yesss again!) So there. We are really, truly, absolutely done celebrating our anniversary.

Although for dinner tonight perhaps we could....

Happy 1st Birthday Cooper!

My adorable nephew is a year old today - WOW! Nothing makes time go faster than a baby. Snap your fingers and a year is gone (and I'm 40!), sheesh. That's because they're so FUN, especially when they belong to your sister and you get the win-win of babysitting AND getting a good night's sleep, ha. If you can't tell by my many postings about him, Cooper is the light of our family right now, the only baby. I can't wait to see him tomorrow to lift my heavy heart. We are missing dear old Sigmund very, very much.

On a food note - yes, I will write about something other than Sigmund and Cooper - I walked up to the fish counter yesterday and said, I'll take what just came in. Happened to be whole trout, so I took two, and completely winged it when I got home to prepare them. They were gutted, and I had the heads taken off, but that's about it, so I did pause for a moment thinking hmmm, what the heck am I doing with you? I started with a smear of olive oil and a sprinkling of sea salt - can never go wrong there. Added a pinch of dried herbs de Provence. Opened them like a book and filled them with lemon and shallot slices. Baked them at 350 for 20 minutes and voila, the bones lifted right out and left behind tender, fragrant fillets. Absolutely delicious. So John and I dined on fresh fish, sipped a lovely pinot noir, shed a few tears, and toasted ol' Rufus. We sure miss you, Roo. Sigh...

Sigmund Louis Levy
3/29/92 - 3/11/07

A very sad day indeed - I had to put down our beloved dog, Sigmund. He's been quite frail for the last several months, so we've known that each day he's felt good was a little gift. Not many Gordon setters get to be almost 15 years old. I returned from Shirley Taylor's funeral yesterday morning - Sigs had stayed with our friend Marty while I was gone, since John is skiing in Colorado, not due back until tomorrow. Marty said that Sigs had had a rough night Thursday night, unable to stand for parts of the night. He was pretty perky yesterday morning when I picked him up, however, and seemed fine all day. Then all of a sudden last night he was completely unable to walk or stand. Nathan and I got him settled for the night, but this morning he was even worse, very disoriented and unable to eat or drink. I called the Golden Valley Emergency Vet and took him in early this afternoon. They were wonderful and so respectful. They gave me all the time I needed to talk to him and say goodbye. I held him while he passed away and I have to say, having never before witnessed a death, I was honored to be there with him and so grateful for how gentle and peaceful his passing was. Sigmund could not have been a kinder animal. He was as purely sweet as they come and we are sadly aware of the loss of such a gentle soul from our lives. Rest in peace, Roo.

Siggy Roooo! Also (and originally) known as Sigmund, our almost-15-year-old Gordon Setter. That's old for any dog, obviously, but especially for a larger breed. The old man is definitely showing his age these days - rheumy eyes, bony, arthritic hips, weak voice, sleeps most of the day, tends to fall alot, and there's precious little left of his hearing. However, he's got a good appetite, a great attitude (when he falls, he usually yawns and then chills where he is until he musters the energy to get back up again), the occasional burst of play energy (he has a little rope toy he runs around with; used to play for several minutes, now it's for several seconds), and he still enjoys a good walk and begging for food like the dog he is. We know our days are limited with old Rufus (sniff), so I thought I'd dedicate a little posting to him today, while he's still feeling pretty darn good (and looking adorable with his jowls caught in his teeth). Here's to you, big guy... Roooo!

Thank goodness for Sigs (and for all of us!) that the weather warmed a bit today. It's tough on old bones, that nasty, bitter chill. I finally got in a decent walk this morning, it's been weeks, ugh. I hear temps are headed back down again (yeeeaah, great) so I thought I'd better get my butt out there while the gettin' was (sorta) good! There's plenty of exercise to be had indoors, of course, but it's not the same as getting fresh air. Ahhh, fresh air. I've been craving fresh air!

I'm not cookin' tonight, nope. There's still leftover pot roast, believe it or not, so I happily had another bit of it. I'll get on the stick tomorrow and come up with something, uh, fabulous. Until then, stay tuned...
