We're Still Celebrating...

Posted By FreshTartSteph on Dec 27, 2008 at 12:36PM

Holidays still going strong here at the Levy Hacienda...  Let's see, we've pretty much been celebrating since Sunday when my bro and sis David and Etta accidentally arrrived - flying from NYC to Billings, MT, through Minneapolis, they missed their connection and couldn't secure another flight until Wednesday morning.  Woo hoo!  Well, not for them, but for Stacey, John, Nathan, Sasha, and me, it was a sweet little present.  I had planned latkes for dinner Sunday night anyhow, and since latkes are a bit labor-intensive for just four people, it worked out quite perfectly to double our group (Stacey, Cooper, plus David and Etta) and have ourselves a little latke feast.  We garnished with sour cream, skipped the apple sauce, and enjoyed every greasy, crispy, salty, glorious bite.  Happy Hanukkah!

Monday we set out for some late shopping and stopped for a lovely meatball sandwich lunch at Broder's.  Monday night I made one of my very favorite soups - Gourmet Cookbook fish soup with croutes and rouille.  I don't think there's a better soup on the planet - brothy, spicy, bright, hearty-yet-light, it hits just about every possible note.  It's also simple and pretty.  Pretty perfect.

Tuesday night we feasted on glorious take-out from Taste of India.  Then Wednesday morning David and Etta were off for Billings, sniff, and I switched into Christmas Eve mode.  Stacey, Cooper, Bowen, and Mom joined John, Nathan, and me for a simple dinner and lots of presents.  I stuck to a loosely Greek theme, with grilled pita, eggplant spread, olive spread, and raw veggies for a pre-din snack.  For dinner I made a simple shrimp and orzo dish, recipe via Bon Apetit.  And for dessert, a warm lemon souffle, big hit.  Perhaps my all-time favorite dessert.

Christmas Day John and I made what has become our annual drive out to my aunt Mary and uncle Bruce's farm, about two hours west of the Twin Cities.  We enjoyed a gorgeous, snowy drive and arrived to find the usual merriment - Mary and Bruce, of course, plus their sons Craig and Michael, and Michael's wife Amanda.  Also my aunt Marge and Uncle Jim and their daughters Kim and Kelly.  Also wine and appetizers and a roaring fire and two pretty trees and all sorts of good smells and conversation.  Dinner 'round the giant table (top pic) was prime rib of beef, sour cream mashed potatoes, Harvard beets, and green beans sauteed with red pepper and pine nuts.  I contributed crusty no-knead bread.  And Marge contributed her perfect cheese cake, with strawberries, on plates lit by little candles (LOVE those candles!).  After dinner we opened gifts (I laughed until I ached at my cousin Kelly's gift from Craig - James Lilek's Gastronomalies book, beyond hilarious) and played team Trivial Pursuits and then John and I drove home.  (Honestly, John drove home and I dozed - I'm such a good travel companion....)

And then today, to keep the merriment going, John and I dug into one of my many beautiful presents, a tin of ca-vi-ar, oh yeah.  I flipped crepes, minced some onion, and boiled and sieved a few eggs.  John popped a bottle of champagne, pried open the tin, and we dug into a little slice of post-Christmas heaven.  Holy Roly Poly Moly.  I'm digesting as I write, then we're off to our third movie of the weekend (opened with Frost/Nixon yesterday, then wandered home to watch The Counterfeiters, then this afternoon we're out the door to see Milk).  A champagne-n-caviar-fueled movie marathon?  Um, yes.

Hope you're relaxing and enjoying your guests and presents and treats and the end of 2008 as well!

Andrew Zimmern wrote a great piece on his Chow & Again blog this week about one of my favorite chefs, Doug Flicker. I don't actually know him (Stacey used to work for him), but Doug used to run lovely Auriga (now closed, sniff) and the food I had there...it blew me away. His was the first truly creative, insanely fresh foodie-food I tasted in Minneapolis, and I will never forget it. Plus, Auriga is where I had my first (blind) date with John, so it forever has a special place in my heart. As much as I love on Lucia's, we'd go to Auriga for our pre-SATC movie date today if it were still there. The rave on AZ's blog is that Doug is leaving Mission American (his post-Auriga gig) - can't wait to see where he lands.

And oh, while I'm mentioning AZ, if you haven't seen Bizarre Foods - Russia yet, you should. We watched it last night and it is spectacular. The scenery is breathtaking (St. Petersburg, wow) and the food is gorgeous - I irritatingly fell asleep with my mouth watering and stomach growling (we watched at bedtime). The killer is a scene where Andrew is downing the freshest of the fresh Russian caviars, with warm blini (basically crepes), rich Russian sour cream, and hard-cooked egg... Lord, help me. I can't believe I didn't dream about caviar - although I'm thinking about it plenty this morning, obviously. Which is too bad, because there is none on the horizon (the pic, above, is from this past Christmas). Shucks.

OK! In other reality-based, non-caviar musings, check out this slideshow on the eight foods you should be eating every day. Not too difficult when you think about it - spinach salad with carrots... Quick black bean soup garnished with tomatoes... Yogurt with toasted oatmeal, walnuts, and blueberries... A little inspiration for healthy, colorful, delicious eating over the weekend. Enjoy yours!

Moderate it: you know the cool things about a diet that includes the eight foods above? It pretty much moderates itself. Thank you, vegetables...

Caviar, caviar, caviar, oooooh, caviar, yay! Merry Christmas to me, tee hee! John and I took the opportunity, with the few hours alone we have this holiday, to indulge in the caviar he gave me for Christmas, with toast points, sour cream, sieved egg, and chopped sweet onion, washed down with lovely Veuve Cliquot champagne. Oh dear, I fret only because how can anything else possibly compare to such romantic decadence? I even thought about making blini, for a perfect Dr. Zhivago-esque experience, but man, too much work. Someday, someday, but with making a big dinner tonight, and baking a couple of loaves of bread for tomorrow, it would be more work than fun, so...buttery toast points instead of blini, hardly a sacrifice, ha.

I won't be posting tomorrow, so consider this my online Christmas card to wish you all a very Merry Christmas! Here's to happy time with family, safe travels, tasty food, and fine drink.

My best to you all, with love, Stephanie

Silver bells, silver lights, let it snow and snow and snow! Yes, it's cold and blustery, but oh my goodness it's beautiful out there, truly a winter wonderland. John and I and both kids celebrated the frosty fabulousness with dinner at Ciao Bella - pizza, risotto, lasagna, salad, calamari, tiramisu, salmon - basically, a tour through their entire menu, ha.

Afterward, full and bundled up (and thankful for all-wheel drive), Nathan and I set out for a tour of a different sort, a Christmas-light tour, first checking out displays we looked up in the newspaper, then ending with simple drives through some of our favorite neighborhoods. I'm such a sucker for the big light displays, and every neighborhood looks perfect and Christmas-y under a blanket of soft, fluffy snow, lit by a full moon no less, warmly cold, silver and gold. Having ourselves a Merry Little Christmas indeed.

Tomorrow, stay tuned for late-morning Christmas caviar on toast points for John and me (one of my presents, nice!), then roast chicken and vegetables with stuffing and pan juices, crab cakes, and chocolate mousse and lefse for Mom, Stacey, Cooper, and Bowen for Christmas Eve dinner.

Thank goodness we'll be opening some presents, I'll be needing the exercise, whew.
